The Hutchinson Community College (HutchCC) Jazz program stands as a premier center for musical excellence, boasting a distinguished history that resonates throughout Kansas and the Midwest. Built upon a foundation of rigor established by the legendary Bryce Luty, the program provides students with a comprehensive curriculum encompassing jazz improvisation, composition, and arranging. A cornerstone of the program is the Bryce Luty Jazz Festival; having recently celebrated its landmark 51st year, the festival continues its tradition as a vital educational summit, drawing high school bands from across the state for intensive clinics and headlining concerts featuring world-renowned guest artists. The program’s instrumental pillar is anchored by the Concert Jazz Band, an elite, auditioned big band that performs at major festivals and regional events. Supporting this flagship group is the Jazz Lab Band, a non-auditioned ensemble designed as a vital training ground for developing musicians, and the Jazz Combo, a versatile small-group ensemble focused on the art of spontaneous improvisation and community engagement. Leading the program is Dr. Jack Cassidy, a world-class trumpeter, pianist, and composer whose career spans the global stage. Dr. Cassidy has toured extensively with blues legend Junior Wells and performed alongside icons such as Van Morrison, Ziggy Marley, Lou Rawls, and Clark Terry. A prolific recording artist, he has collaborated with jazz luminaries including Bob Mintzer and Mike Stern. Dr. Cassidy earned his Doctorate in Jazz Studies from the University of Illinois (2022) and has taught internationally in Sweden, Spain, Mexico, and Jamaica. His deep roots in the Chicago jazz scene and his leadership of the contemporary ensemble SYMBIA bring a professional, world-ready perspective to the students of HutchCC.
